This is a video clip of my photos from day 1 of filming. We did get a lot done unfortunately we didn't finish as the camera died. As we spent the day in London I think we did have a lot of clips and I am happy with the result of our clips so far. The date of the actual filming was Wednesday 30th October 2013.
These weere the props that we all agreed to take to London. It was good to plan in advance as it then meant when it came to filming we were able to get things done.
Health and Safety is important when we film our music video, so we need to ensure that we are organised and take necessary precautions before the day. We all had specific clothing for the music video to suit the character we were playing.
Hannah was the main singer, this meant that we had to insure she didn't stand out to much as we needed to insure the narrative came across in the music video. We therefore chose her to wear; black coat, scarf,boots,jeans and her hair up. As her shots were meant to be filmed in forest areas and it was winter time we felt like this would work well. She only had one outfit for the day due the fact, she was the majority of the time going to be in the same place. Also we wanted to make the music video seem realistic and with a lot of music video's the main singer doesn't change outfit frequently.
Francesca was the single girl, being the single girl the narrative was based around me. This meant that i had to appear frequently throughout the music video, to make the music video realistic i had 3 different outfits. Outfit 1; coat,leggings,blue vans and a book. Although our music genre is pop, the song itself isn't that upbeat therefore wearing bright colour wouldn't really go with the style of the song. The second outfit i had was; pink jumper, leggings and boots. As we were up London we had to think about the convenience of constantly changing clothes, however from also researching music videos we found that in some music videos including Carly Rae Jepsen's music video for 'Call Me Maybe' she only changes 3 times. We also came up with an alternative outfit for myself just in case this was; white cardigan,jeans,blue top and blue vans. This was to show that it was a different day if we needed to.
Isobel was the girlfriend. We had 2 clothing changes for Isobel just in case as well. The first clothing was; black coat, pattern dress and black pumps. We chose this outfit to show a change in day if necessary. The main outfit we chose for Isobel was; Jeggings, pink/purple top and black converse. We chose this outfit as it fitted into the pop genre of being a teenager which is who out target audience is. Also as Isobel was part of the main narrative we needed to insure she stood out like myself therefore we chose bright colour like the pink/purple top.
Jack was the boyfriend. Jack isn't part of our group however as we needed a boy in our music video we asked him to do it and he agreed. The first outfit we chose for him was; blue jeans, shirt,jumper and shoes/converse. We chose this as he is a typical teenager, and therefore wearing clothes that would relate to our target audience would make the music video more realistic. We also chose a second outfit for Jack which linked in with his first outfit this was; coat, blue jeans and shoes/converse. Although Jack is a reoccurring character in our music video we needed him to have different clothing, however as he isn't in the music video as frequently it didn't matter if his clothing wasn't that much different from his first outfit.
Hannah will be the main singer, I will be the single girl, Isobel will be the girlfriend and I have also asked my Jack to be in the music video which he agreed. He will be taking on the role of the boyfriend. We came up with the individual roles quite quickly, Hannah wanted to do the singing part and me and Isobel decided individually what role we would prefer.
This is our music video pitch, it outlines what are music video is about. Our music video is a pop genre we appeals to 13-18 year old girls. We also came up with things they may like/dislike which we used in our audience profile. We have also come up with the basic narrative of our music video which is a single girl is torn - which links into the song name, between being in love with her ex boyfriend and moving on. He has a new girlfriend, yet still talks to his ex girlfriend. We felt this linked in with the target audience well as they go through heartbreak as teenagers. We also felt as teenagers ourselves we knew what our target audience will like and dislike and where able to include this in our music video plans.
This is our music video pitch that we presented to the class. We included the narrative of our music video, as well as similar artists within this genre. We also spoke about possible locations for our music video. We also wrote out our pitch on paper, before we started planning our music video so we knew exactly what we wanted the music video to include, which can be seen in a previous blog.

This is a link to our music video storyboards in total we have 70 shots. We decided to also include the lyrics as well as the second of each music video so that when it comes to the editing stage we know exactly how long the clip should be and also where it is meant to be. By having our plan complete it means that on the day of shooting we know exactly where each shot is taken place. I think that being more organised for our real media video is important as we found that we ran out of clips for the practise video and we might not have the opportunity to travel to London again to film each shot that we missed. I presented my storyboard on a website called PhotoSnack so that it is easier to see each storyboard individually.
Another music video which is similar to our music video is Taylor Swift's - I knew you were trouble
At the beginning of Taylor Swifts video she is stranded in the middle of no where, this shows that being in the middle of no where is a recurring theme in music videos as All Saints video - Pure Shores where also stranded in the middle of a dessert. We are also going to use this in our music video as this will help our video stand up to real life media if other current music videos are still using it today. We have decided to go for a field in the middle of nowhere to go with the theme of the song as it is called torn and we think the idea of being stranded in the middle of no where in the cold would work well.
Taylor Swift also uses a bedroom scene, we are going to be using a similar thing in our music video. As this music video is also about heartbreak I think by also using a bedroom scene would help make our video more realistic as other pop videos still use it in their music videos.
Taylor Swift also uses a flash back of memories although the main singer is not the person in the story, we will also be using a flashback of good times as i think this would work well with the theme of heartbreak.
We have also decided to use a knecklace, as the lyrics are about 'losing faith' i think this idea would work well, as Taylor Swift's video does a similar thing i think it will help convey the emotion of heartbreak in our music video like Taylor Swift does in her music video.
As we are doing a similar theme to Taylor Swift's video who is a successful pop artist i think our music video will seem realistic, as long as we get the shots perfect. Although we hadn't seen this music video before we started planning properly, i still think the similarities shows that we will be following a continuous successful theme in music videos.
I decided to ask my sister about what she would expect to see in a pop music video, and also to see what she thought we should include as part of my research. She fits into the teenage market meaning that her ideas would help to aim our music video at people in our target market.
The audience that our music video is aimed at is teenagers from 13-17 however older girls may also be interested in our music video as it is about heartbreak which is something that all girls can relate too.
-The typical girl who would like our music video is someone who likes to go shopping, likes to have sleepover with friends as well as hang out with boys. I think this is a typical everyday girl as although not every girl likes to do all these things they can take out one thing they enjoy to do which would make the fit into the category of girls who would like our music video.
-The genre is 'pop' although it isn't up beat pop it is still a form of pop, due to the fact that their are a lot of elements to the song that make it fit this genre these are; the idea of heartbreak, the idea of losing someone you love, laughter and friendship. We are also going to use photos in our music video which you see in a lot of videos in the pop genre on the walls of girls bedroom or around their room.
- We have decided to do a modern version of a song as although the pop genre may have changed over the last 10 years slightly, their is still a lot people can relate to such as the narratives,as well as the colours 10 years ago the Spice Girls who were a pop girl band wore bright colours this is still a recurring theme today. We chose Natalie Imbruglia's song also because of the fact we knew the song from being younger teenagers (13/14) ourselves as it was still a popular song when we were in our teens by doing a modern version we still want to fit this target audience.
Another song that Natalie Imbruglia was successful with is 'Shiver' which was released in 2005. This music video has more of a narrative and is spy themed. The music video includes a lot of quick cuts and with Natalie Imbruglia playing the main singer as well as person the narrative is about. We have decided to make ours slightly different with the narrative being based around someone else rather than the narrative. However one thing that I did learn from looking at this music video is that their is a balanced between the main singer lip-syncing and the narrative which is important as we don't want to make the narrative to complex as the main singer needs to be the focus of the music video.
We have decided to use various train stations in the music video, to help with the narrative. One way it will help is because our video is about a girl who has gone through a heart break. We thought the idea of trains rushing past would help to explain her emotions.
We are going to use this idea of trains rushing by in our music video, we are also going to use a similar effect with cars. However the speed will be a lot quicker which we will incorporate in the editing stages. As the song is called 'torn' i think the idea of a train rushing past would link in with the lyrics well. Also a lot of music videos use different short cuts so this would help to make our music video more realistic.
Another possible location we are considering using is this place in London called South Bank Isobel had been their before and said it is a really nice place to shoot, we think this location would work well for the narrative that we are using all the way through our music video.
The majority of the places we want to use are in London as this is a busy location I think it would work well. Me, Hannah and Isobel were aware that the shots need to be varied from doing our practise task that is why we have decided using trains would also be a unique idea for our music video.
We also want to use a field for the main singer, as we will constantly go back to that place when she lip-syncs i think this would work well, and after looking at the All Saints - Pure shores video of the girls being stranded in the middle of dessert i think this idea would still be current and a good idea to use.
This is a picture of Hannah doing the work ;) We were working on our story board for the music video. We decided to make the storyboard second by second with the song which is something we learnt from doing the practise video as we realised that we didn't have enough seconds to fill the music video last time. We also included the lyrics on the storyboard so that we know what part we are up to when it comes to actually creating the video. It will also be useful during the editing stage as we can tick off each part we have completed. I was the one who worked out the seconds of the clips and wrote what we were doing each clip as well as helping come up with the ideas. Hannah wrote down what section of the video we were up to as well as come up with ideas for the video. Isobel helped coming up with the ideas as well found some locations she has previously been to which would work well. I think by keeping everything the same every time we came to planning we managed to get each shot done quickly and although it is a 4 minute song we got the work done on time.
The track we will be using is Natalie Imbruglia's song torn. Natalie Imbruglia is an Australian singer/songwriter. The song Torn was an international hit and was the first song that launched Natalie Imbruglia's career. The song was released in 1997 which fitted the criteria set as it was over 10 years old. The track was taken of the album 'Left of the middle' which was also released in 1997. The song was number 2 in its first week of release in the UK singles chart. Natalie Imbruglia has had success since the release of the song torn, however this is one of her most notable achievements in her music career. Natalie Imbruglia released the song torn with RCA Records and BMG Rights Management. her first album sold over 6 million copies worldwide.

As i will be using an already existing song, i need to ask permission from the record company that released Natalie Imbruglia's song as well as herself. This is to ensure that their is no copy right with the song and so that they are aware of what i am doing.
RCA Records are the record label that released Natalie Imbruglia's song torn. I have wrote a letter to ask them permission to use it.
I have also sent a letter to Natalie Imbruglia who is the artist who released the song.
Above is All Saints music video for pure shores. All Saints do very similar music to Natalie Imbruglia therefore some of the ideas from this video might be useful to use in our own music video.
1. What elements enable you to recognise the genre?
One thing that we need to make sure that we do our music video is make sure the genre is recognisable. From looking at this video i think the genre would be pop, i get this impression due to the fact their is a group of girls and their is a lot of cuts of the girls. Although this isn't happy pop, i still think it fits this genre as they are a girl band also the fact that the music video is based around them. Also they are wearing coats and are in a surrounded area this links in with the idea of pop as the girls are completely alone. Also i think that as they are wearing coats this represents pop more than rock would as you would expect a lot of dark clothing in that particular genre, and the cuts although they would be quick they wouldn't necessarily be so calm cuts they would be quick and snappy. As we are doing a pop music video, the idea of being stranded and alone would work for our music video to follow the pop theme
2. Why is it important from a distributors point-of-view that the video highlights the genre of the music?
I think it is important as otherwise the distributor wouldn't be aiming the video at the correct target market. I think this particular music video is aimed at teenage girls. I get this impression due to the fact firstly, the girls are young themselves which fits the idea of pop genre. Also the song itself is called pure shores and is based around the theme of the beach which links in with the song and a lot of music videos do this.
3. How is the artist/band used in the video?
The band in this music video tell the story of a film, as their are clips from a particular film in the video. However in this particular video they are still the main focus which i think means that they are telling the story for them film as well as themselves.
4. How many locations are used?
For the band in the music video there is only 2 main locations used this is the surrounded dessert which is used as the day theme and the beach for the night theme. However their are also various shots of different locations taken from the film.
5. How does the film's media language appeal to its target audience?
I think the idea of the beach connects with girls as they enjoy the sun and also the idea of friendship as this is a group of 4 girls. There are various camera angles used one specifically used is a hand cam which makes the video almost appear like it was shot by the girls who decided to make a music video. This also links in with the target audience of girls as they like to make videos with their friends and have fun. I think the song itself can also be interpreted in different ways such as loss of friendship or a loss of someone you love. This idea makes it appeal to the target audience as they can relate to it in a particular way that suits them.
As we are doing a modern version of a music video, although we will use more locations in the video i think the idea of being stranded some where works well particularly for the main singer. Also we have decided to go for a narrative of heartbreak in our video. Also this video uses a films clip it is still similar to our video and shows that using a narrative still works in the music industry today.
Our final music video choice is Natalie Imbruglia's song called torn. Some of the things we had to consider when making our decision included; -Length of the song
When we did our practise video, we realised the song was 5 minutes long and we struggled to find something to do in each clip. This song is 4 minutes long which meant that it was more suitable for us to come up with a story board for it.

We felt we should do a song which is over 10 years old as we could then put a modern twist on it. This song fitted the criteria as it was made in 1997. - Female singer
Although we considered using a man, we didn't know if they would have the time to be a part of our video. As we are 3 girls in our group by choosing a female singer we knew one of us could take the main singer role. - Narrative
We enjoyed doing the practise video as we were able to come up with a clear narrative of someone leaving home going to University. I think this song has a narrative which we can use as it is about heartbreak.
Overall i am happy with our final song choice and i do think that we can create a modern twist on this song, which is current and would appeal to the target audience of teenagers that we are interested in.

As a group we decided to evaluate a current pop music video. We felt Carly
Rae Jepsen's music video suited the genre we were interested in.
My suggestions were in red. Some of the things we came up
with included that it was humorous however it didn’t use clowns to entertain it
used every day situations which people can relate to which is something that I
personally liked and think we can use in our music video. We also included
something similar in the practise Eliza Doolittle music video as there were a
lot of outtakes were the clip went wrong and I started laughing I think that
this worked well in the practise video and as Carly Rae Jepsen also used clips
like this like when she falls of the car, it shows is something that real music
videos use. Something else that I liked was the bright colour, we noticed this
in the Eliza Doolittle music video as well, and this is something that we need
to be aware off when we do our music video. Another thing we noticed is that
the main singer changed clothing 3 times which is something we need to be aware
of as if we do film our music video in one or two days that we do have at least
2/3 different pieces of clothing otherwise the video won’t look realistic enough.
Overall I think Carly Rae Jepsen's video did help us come up with ideas for our
own music video as there was a lot we could relate to being young and there is
a lot we could use when it comes to our own music video.
